Dr. Fareed Abdullah

Fareed Abdullah is a Medical Doctor, a Specialist in Public Health Medicine, and an HIV Clinician. He is the Director of AIDS and TB Research at the South African Medical Research Council. He is the former CEO of the South African National AIDS Council, where he championed HIV prevention and programmes for key populations such as sex workers. Before that, he was the Africa Director of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. He is known for implementing the first public sector PMTCT and ART programmes in the Western Cape, where he was Deputy Director General and head of the AIDS Programme from 1994 to 2006.
