Prof. Catherine Orrell

Professor Catherine Orrell is a clinical pharmacologist and HIV physician working with HIV-infected patients in clinical trials and observational cohorts since 1997. She leads DTHF Centre for Adherence and Therapeutics (DCAT), based at the Gugulethu Research Offices, and leads the pharmacokinetic work at the DTHF Clinical Trials Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital. She has been the principal and co-investigator on more than 30 clinical trials of antiretroviral drugs and vaccines, including a range of efficacy, toxicity and dosing studies, both pharmaceutical and investigator driven. Her research interests are HIV clinical pharmacology, ART as treatment, adherence/retention in care and resistance to ART. She has an extensive publication record in these fields.

Prof. Orrell manages a multidisciplinary team at DCAT overseen by the site investigator, Dr Lauren Jennings, who provides clinical oversight for the community studies; and manages the study coordinators. They, in turn, manage the Community Research Workers, a team of eight laywomen from the local community who have research skills supporting the completion of informed consent processes, data collection and entry, and study recruitment and retention.
